Dear Duchesne Academy Omaha Students
Hello! My name is Jihyo, and I am a sophomore at Sangsan High School. I’m 17 years old in Korean age, but it would be 16 years in the US. I have never been to American mainland, so I wonder how the US is and how I can enjoy America. Let me introduce my life in Sangsan High School. I wonder if some of you are curious about life in Korea. If you know some Korean culture, what’s your favorite one?
There is a dormitory in my high school. My school is selective school like your school, so a great number of student come from other regions. School is in Jeonju where is well-known as a Korean Folk Village, but Where I originally am from is Seoul! I have lived in Seoul for 15 years so I can introduce Seoul if you would like! What do you want to do if you ever visited Seoul?
Now I will write about my school life. Everyday I wake up at 6:10 am. The alarms goes off at 6:30 in the dorm, but I wake up earlier and take a shower. After getting ready, I go to the school cafeteria and have breakfast. We could have whatever we want, cereal, bread, rice, and etc. They are served every day. Then I go to school. We have 8 classes a day. One class is 50 minutes and between classes, we take 10 minute break. Also, we have a long lunch break of 1 hour and 20 minutes. Our lunch is always delicious. Then school ends at 5:10. But It doesn’t mean it really ended. All of the students have evening study hall from 6:30 to 9:20. So I have to eat dinner and study more. But I love dinner time because It is the only time that I can go out to eat instead of at school cafeteria. The cafeteria foods are fine, but I’d rather go out and eat. My friends and I usually eat tteokbokki, ramen, and sweet and sour chicken when we are out. It may feel frustrated to go back to study after dinner, but I take it as teenagers' life in Korea. What do you do with your friends after school?
As you can see from what I’ve written so far, I love eating delicious food. From what I see on TV, it seems as though you enjoy greasy, carbohydrate-rich foods in the US. Actually, I really like that kind of food too! I like food with lots of cheese or bread. So I like many American foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs, donuts, bagels, and fried chicken. Can you recommend some of your favorite restaurants? I wonder what kind of food they sell and what they taste like!
I have a lot of ambition. One of the ambition is being a surgeon! I’m trying my best to achieve it and I’m sure I will. I will step out of my comfort zone and try to broaden my perspective! What’s your ambition? And what effort are you making to achieve that?
How does my high school life in Korea look? Is your life similar to mine? I have a lot of questions about the US. If you have any other characteristics of American school that you want to share, please let me know! I hope we can all study hard and achieve what we want! Good luck
Sincerely,
Jihyo-Lee
