Dear, Duchense Academy of the Sacred Heart Student
Hi! It is such a pleasure to meet you. I'm Dagyeom Baik, a first-year student at Sangsan High School. I am 17 years old in Korean aging and 16 in American aging. I am high-key(Learned this word at school. I really never heard of this word. Do you guys really use this?) excited becoming pen pals with you. I lived in Norwood, New Jersey 10 years ago for about 3 1/2 years and kept on learning English. But the language barrier is still high for me since it's not my first language. I might make a few mistakes and say things the wrong way so sorry if my English is a little weird.
I will tell you about my daily life in Sangsan High School. Our school has a dormitory where most of the students live in. I am also one of the students living in the dorm. I takes about 4 hours by car to go to my house. Every morning we do a roll call at 6:30. I take a shower and go out of my room(there are 4~5 ppl in one room) at 7:20 to eat breakfast. We have to get to the classroom by 7:55 and at 8:10, our first class starts. Each class is 50 minutes long and our break-times are 10 minutes long. We listen to most of our class at our classroom except for about four subjects. After school ends, we do self-studying mandatorily from 6:30pm to 9:20pm in our classrooms and more self-studying from 10:00pm to 11:20pm in our dorms. I don't really like self-studying because it gets boring easily but if we don't have that time, we don't really have time to study by ourselves. October 18th is when our midterm exam starts so our class is getting quiet these days. I'm curious about your life in your school.
The weekdays are all like this but on weekends, there is nothing we have to do. Students usually go to institutes(I'm not sure if that's the right word. Hakwon may be more familiar to you if you heard of S.Korea's education.) or just spend their time in their dorm rooms doing anything they want to do. I usually watch Youtube all day long(I mean literally) but when there is a lot of school work to do, I can only watch it for about an hour or two. Some students go back to their home and rest but I prefer staying in school because it takes too long to go home and the day I spend when I am home isn't really different from my day in the dorm.
I am a big fan of action and fiction movies, especially Hollywood movies. The most recent Hollywood action movie I saw in the movie theater is Top Gun. I am sure you must have seen it. If not, I strongly recommend you to see it. I watched Top Gun 1 on Netflix and Top Gun: Maverick in the theater and I still listen to the OSTs. The OST by OneRepublic is a bop(learned this word by a kpop idol; Mark of NCT). I also like the Mission Impossible series and fiction movies like Ready Player One and Harry Potter. One of the most favorite movies of mine is actually Intern, a very calming movie with Anne Hathaway as the main character. There are way more movies I want to talk about but I will stop here.
The letter got too long but I can't end this letter without talking about kpop. My favorite kpop group is Seventeen, but I like all of the other groups too. I started to like kpop groups when I was in 4th grade, elementary. BTS was the first group I liked. It was when Blood, Sweat & Tears came out. It was a big hit(^^) in Korea at that time. Their songs really helped me go through my hard times and I still go back to their old songs to cheer up. These days I usually cheer up with Seventeen songs. I am curious if you know about kpop and actually listen to them. I heard that kpop is only popular to some people in the States and not many people are fond of it. I also like American pop songs. I usually get to know American pop songs by youtube channels like soso playlist and staying. They are Korean youtube channels that recommend songs and make videos by using parts of movies that go along with the song. They really help me to listen to all kinds of songs.
I think I need to wrap up now. I wrote too much. Thank you for reading this long letter and sorry if I took too much of your time. I don't have an Instagram or Facebook ID or any type of SNS ID but I'll write you my email(dagyeom16@gmail.com). Korean students don't really use their emails that much so my answer might take a long time to arrive to you. I am looking forward to your letter and I hope we become good pen pals.
Sincerely, Dagyeom.
p.s. These pictures are our school! The sunset picture is before the typhoon Hinnamno came to Korea.
