Dear Duchesne Academy student,
Hi! I'm Jiwoo. I am 16 years old and I am a freshman at Sangsan High School. A few days ago, I saw a YouTube video introducing your school! I think it'll be high-key free and fun. I am writing this pen pal to tell you how our school is different from yours. It may be hard to read due to my poor English skills, but I hope this letter will be an opportunity to learn about Korean schools.
Today, I'm going to talk to you about my school routine and the characteristics of a universal Korean school. I hope you enjoy this time reading my letter. Before talking about our school routine, I have something to tell you. A great number of the students in our school live in dormitories. So this routine means the routine of dorm students. First of all, the official wake-up time is 6:30 (but I wake up at 6 to get ready quickly because I take a shower in the morning). School is until 7:50 a.m. I usually arrive at 7:15 and study in the morning. I take a total of 8 classes a day, 50 minutes at a time. Then the school schedule ends at 5:10. It's lunchtime from 12 to 1:20. Since I have relatively plenty of time, I usually study on my own or make up for my lack of sleep after eating. After school, I eat dinner and do something called night self-study from 6:30 to 9:20. I don’t want to do this but I don’t have power. Go back to the dormitory by 10 o'clock after the study hall. There is also self-study at the dormitory from 10 to 11:20. Like night self-study, it is a study time that all dormitory students have to participate in. Then, I wash my face until 12 and go to bed. If you stay up after noon, you can get penalty points because it violates the dormitory rules, but if you stay quiet in the room, the teacher doesn't know. So, everyone would secretly watch their phones or study or do homework that they couldn't finish during the day. So I usually go to bed at 1 o' These days, my friends study more than usual because it's the midterm preparation period. Some friends study during break time and even study while eating. I feel ashamed when I see such friends.
In my school, first-year students learn Korean, math, social studies, science, English, English conversation, Korean history, classical Chinese (we can think of it as ancient Chinese used in our country), music, art, physical education, science exploration experiment, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. In Korean, I learn ancient literature, grammar, reading comprehension, composition, etc. Society deals with world geography, Korean geography, law and politics, and ethics. In English class, I learn grammar and vocabulary by analyzing short non-literary texts.
Now, let's talk about the characteristics of universal Korean schools. As I said earlier, there is night self-study (I've already talked about it, so I'll move on). And there's a school uniform. Girls' and boys' uniforms are divided. In most schools, girls have girls' shirts, skirts, knit vests, and jackets. Boys wear boys' shirts, pants, knit vests, and jackets. The attached picture is our school uniform picture. Our school has a fabric vest and a cardigan.
Do you have any hobbies? I don't have a hobby these days, so there's nothing fun to do when I don't want to study. If you have, can you recommend it to me? I want to share my hobby with you and get close to you!! I think the sooner we make common ground, the better. I wish I could be close to you. I look forward to reading your response soon!!
Best, Jiwoo
