Dear American High School Student,
My name is Yoo Jun Sang and I am a first-year student at Sangsan High School in Jeonju. I am 17 years old! I have the same name as a famous Korean actor. I feel like my name is special, and because of it, I have been a big fan of him.
I want to tell you a bit about my life as a student in South Korea. I have lived at my school in a dormitory on campus with a great number of other students. My family lives in Ilsan and it's far away, so sometimes I feel depressed because I miss them. However, I have a lot of friends at school, so I also enjoy hanging out with them. I usually play soccer with them. How do you play with your friends at school?
Now I will share my daily life with you here at Sangsan High School. I always wake up at 6:30am in the dormitory. Then my roommates and I do the roll call. After that, I sleep again for 30 minutes, and then I wake up at 7:00 to shower. After taking a shower, I go to school at 7:30 and do self-study until school starts. Our first class starts at 8:10 and the last class ends at 5:10pm. How is life in an American high school different from life in a Korean high school?
In Korea, you take a test called Suneung to get into college. This is similar to the ACT and SAT in the US. But of course there are differences. First, the number of exams taken every year is different. Also, SAT and ACT test taker go to college with the best score among several tests they took many times, but when we take Suneung several times, the previous grades are invalidated and they keep resetting. Personally, I prefer the American test system to the Korean one. What do you think?
After lunch I play soccer with my friends. I high-key like it. Also, I study until 11:20 and go back to the dorm, eat sweets with my roommate, and watch YouTube or movies. We also talk while eating ramen. As a general rule, dormitories should not consume food except water, but there seems to be few students who follow this Playing or talking with my friends while doing them is the pleasure of my high school life.
When I have more free time, I hope to go to your school! What do you recommend I do when I go there?
I look forward to reading your response soon!
Best,
Yoo Jun Sang
