Dear American Student

Hi, I am a first-year student at Sangsan High School. I am 17 years old in Korean age and 15 years old in American age. Since I've never been to I.s before, I have a lot of questions. I'm very happy to exchange letters with you!

First, I'll briefly tell you things about me. Let me start with my daily routine. I usually get up at 6:30. Then I eat breakfast and go to school by 7 o'clock. School starts around 8 o'clock, so I usually study until then. After a few classes, it’s lunchtime! My school’s lunch is very delicious, so I literally wait for lunchtime all day. School usually ends around 5 o'clock. After that, I study almost continuously in school and dormitory. But I think I spend more time spacing out or thinking about other things rather than studying. I usually sleep around 12 o'clock. To be honest, life is a little boring because I live the same routine every day. How is your day going? I’m so curious.

The special thing about our school is that it has a dormitory. Most of our school students, including me, live in dormitories. Usually, 4 or 5 people use the same room, but honestly, it's a little hard. And I often miss home because I have to stay far away from home. But the good thing about living in the dormitory is that I can spend lots of time with my friends! So I prefer the dormitory!

Since these days it's exam season in my school, I don’t have time to rest… But when I have spare time, I usually play games or watch YouTube. Especially, I high-key like playing games, so I am planning to play games all day long after the exam. The sooner the exam is over the better! What is your hobby? Do you have any hobbies to recommend to me?

Hi! It's nice to hear from you. My name is Rion and I go to Bryan community focus program (which is a highschool). I'm 16 years old American age, 17 Korean age. Ive been pretty excited for these letters since I've heard about them so I'm happy to answer questions and even ask my own.

I'll go off the same format as you wrote your letter. I wake up at about 6 and get to school around 7. School starts at 8:10. We have 8 periods a day, 5 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. We get out of school at about 3 everyday to which I get home and study. We don't live on campus here, that's usually reserved for collage students. I currently live with my mom and that's it. I have an older sister who comes over sometimes. I hope to move out in the next year or so as I'll be graduating this December (which is a year and a half earlier then most people) There are 4 grades in highschool, 3 in middle, and 6 in elementary. Once done studying I usually talk to friends or read or play games. I usually head to bed around 9 or 10, I'm not a morning person.

I think it would be fun to live in a dormitory with my friends, I crave the independence and being able to have more alone time. Whenever my friends and I have time outside of school we often head out to eat or watch movies or shop. Nebraska is kind of boring, there isn't much to do here except for out to eat at restaurants.

I'm not a big fan of exams either, I always get super nervous before tests. In the end I'm happy with an A or a B. The grading systems here are based after the American alphabet. Think A as the best, B slightly below, C is below B, D is almost failing, and F is failing. I like watching YouTube, I like playing games too when I have a chance. I paint a lot and do a lot of different art. I was thinking about going to higher schooling for art but I'm not quite sure yet. I'm really nervous to graduate as Im not sure what I want to do next but happy for it to be over.

Now for my questions. Do you get much privacy at the dormitory? What do you and your friends do when you don't have school? Do you have to pay for school or is it free? Here we celebrate Christmas or yule on December 24th and would love to hear about what you celebrate around that time. What do you watch on YouTube? What games do you play? If you have any more questions for me don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you so much for your reply! It's nice to know a lot about you. Also, thank you for asking me questions! I'll answer them one by one.

First of all, it is true that privacy in the dormitory is lacking. Since up to five people live in one room, there is almost no private space for me. It's hard to live in a dormitory because everyone can see what I'm doing.

Second, when I don't have school, students here usually study or enjoy their free time. In my case, I think I play games when there is no important test and spend most of my time studying when there is an exam.

Third, I pay for school. I pay for using the dormitory or school meals, so it's a little expensive compared to other normal schools.

Fourth, we spend Christmas, too. Christmas is almost the biggest festival in our country, so many people enjoy it. Not only me but also many students have fun with their friends and family because school is closed on Christmas.

Lastly, I think I usually watch a variety of things on YouTube. I think I watch game broadcasts often these days. And I usually play Minecraft with my friends or younger brother.

How is that possible when you said you graduate earlier than other students? (It was interesting because it is impossible for us to graduate early) What are your favorite books and games? How do you spend Christmas?
