Dear American High School Student,
Hi! My name is Jeong-woo Kang and I am a first-grader at Sangsan High School. I was born in Chicago and lived there for 2 years, but since I was so young when I was in the US, I can’t remember anything about America. I’m 16 years old now, and I’m curious about American students' daily lives and cultures. I hope you can tell me about your school and I would like to tell you about my life in our school first.
The most special thing about Sangsan Highschool is that most of our students live in a dormitory. Our school dormitory is located in Jeonju, where it takes nearly 3 hours to go from Seoul. Since I live in Seoul, I can’t see my parents often. Except when it’s vacation, I usually see my parents once a month! In my classroom, a great number of my friends live in Seoul, so we almost spend every day together, from day to night. Now I will share my daily routine with you. The morning call wakes us up at 6:30 am, and we need to go to school by 7:55 am. But for me, waking up at 6:30 every day is so hard, so I prefer to wake up at 7:00. Also, I guess sleeping more makes my condition better, which helps me to concentrate on class. Our last class ends at 5:10, and then we eat dinner. Everyone here high-key likes our school’s dinner, and everyone is interested in the daily dinner menu.
After dinner, ‘self-study time’ starts. We study 5 hours a day after school in self-study time, and it’s mandatory. I want to know if there’s mandatory self-study time in America too, and I think it shouldn't be mandatory though. It’s hard to concentrate on studying for 5 hours all the time. Since we’re in the exam period now, I must study as hard as I can, but you know, it’s not that easy for me. Self-study time finishes at 11:20, and that's when I can get free time! I'm a big fan of soccer, so I usually enjoy my free time watching Premier League, or playing online games. What are your favorite sports and how do you spend your free time?
In Korea, many students study hard to graduate from a better university! In the case of our school, students from all over the country who are interested in math and science come here. There are so many talented and smart friends in our school, which makes me feel frustrated sometimes because I’m not so talented. Competitions among friends make studying much harder too. However, living in a dormitory with friends surely has more merits! When having a hard time, I can easily talk about my worries to friends. Also, most of us dream of being a doctor in the future, and I guess it’s lucky to have friends who share the same goal as me. They help me a lot, and I don't feel lonely anytime when I'm with them.
I want to visit New York someday, and want to know about their culture. I hope you recommend famous places to visit for me too. I’m looking forward to your reply soon!
Sincerely, Jeong-woo
