Dear Duchense Academy of the Sacred Heart student
Hi! My name is Yehee and I’m a first-year student at Sangsan High School. I’m 15 years old, but I am 17 years old in Korean age. Korean age doesn’t count based on birthday, it counts based on years. At the year you are born, you are one year old. The next year, when it becomes January first, you become two years old. Isn’t it interesting? How old are you in Korean age?
Like Korean age, Korea has its own cultures different from US. I am curious about school life in two countries. How alike and how different will it be? I will tell you mine first. At Sangsan High, students follow very strict scheduled plans. Most Sangsan students live in dormitory. Every 6:30AM, morning alarm song rings everywhere. Students wake up, and the superintendent teacher checks every room to make sure students are awake. Then, we have breakfast and go to school until 7:55AM. We have eight classes until 5:20PM. From 6:30PM to 9:20PM, we have evening self-studies. It’s very long, isn’t it? I’m interested in US student’s schedule. Can you share yours?
I think our school’s best part is school meal. At Korea, all students go to cafeteria and have meals. Our school has two menus every lunch, Korean dishes and Western dishes. Menu differs every time, and most of them are delicious! I prefer Korean dishes more. Have you eaten Korean dishes before? If you have, what is your favorite? One Korean traditional food I want to suggest to you is Bibimbap. Jeonju, where our school is at, is famous for Bibimbap. If you have a chance to visit Jeonju, I hope you can try it.
The other good part of our school is school activities and festival. My favorite school activity is samgyeopsal party. Samgyeopsal is grilled pork belly. At our front yard, cafeteria staffs grill a great number of samgyeopsal, and we eat as much as we want. This is a picture of me and my classmates at the party in May. This week, we have an another samgyeopsal party! I can’t wait for the party. Also, after midterm test, we have school festival, Kyelai. Every year, the whole school matches the outfit concept and enjoy the festival. This is my first year in Sangsan, so, it’s my first time to participate in the festival. I never had this kind of experience before. Have you ever did school activies like these before? How was it? Does your school also have a festival? I can’t wait to hear about them from you!
Do you have a hobby that helps you to relieve stress? I like to listen to music. I am a big fan of K-Pop. Watching K-Pop idol’s stages makes me cheerful and excited. Have you heard K-Pop music before? If you have, who is your favorite artist? Do you have any Korean culture that you are interested in? I hope one day that you will come to Korea and visit our school and have fun together wih me. The sooner we meet, the better!
Your friend,
Yehee from Sangsan High
