Dear my pen pal
Hello! My name is Minjae, and I am a first-year student at Sangsan High School. I am 15 years old, and I am counted as a sophomore in American High school. Starting the letter, I would like to introduce about my name! In Korea, one's name is usually made with Hanja, a character that Korea have had in common with China. Hanja has its own meanings and sounds in each letter. So in Hanja, My name is Min and Jae combined. Min means 'common class' and Jae is similar to the prime minister. My name's true meaning is quite questionable (just kidding!), but I would accept my name positively. What is your name, and what does it mean for you?
I would happily share my high school life to you, now. Currently, I am attending to a dormitory school, which has a beautiful greenery throughout the campus. Since our school students have a wide range of where they live (Lots of students are from the capital, Seoul or Gyeongi), over 90 percent of students live at the dormitory. Doesn't it sound fun to live in the beautiful campus and have our life going on with familiar friends? Sometimes, I miss my parents so much, but I can call them right away. Nowadays, I found that none can actually take away my loneliness, but it's me kind of being emotional. Despite the confusions, I try focusing on myself, and it has been better than I ever even knew.
How do you feel nowadays?
I took a picture of my school!
Now I will tell you my daily life in Sangsan school. All the students go to sleep at 24:00, and morning bell rings at 6:30. The school starts at 7:55, so we must be prepared until that time. For me, my schedule is up to what I should do. If I am studying for the exams, I usually get up early in the morning, wear school uniforms, have breakfast, and go to school in 7 o' clock. However, when nothing has to be done immediately, I sleep until almost 7: 10, and arrive exactly at the time the bell rings. I prefer to sleep more. When it comes to me, I found loss of sleep irritating! I try to start my day by stretching my still-sleeping body. Being healthy and happy is the most important thing for me!
Lunch time is between the fourth class and fifth class for 80 minutes, and when the school ends at 5:10 p.m., I clean my classroom and have dinner for 80 minutes. We have to eat lunch in cafeteria, but we can also eat out at dinner. For me, cafeteria foods seems both healthy and delicious, so rather than eating really-delicious fried chicken, I mostly choose to eat inside our school. For almost 3 hours, we have to self-study after school. The system is mandatory 😢 😢 😢, but it gets bearable when you get used to and admit it. (the trickiest part) I study in the time, and also don't repress my needs to do what I want to, even when I want to chill or rest. After that, 40 minutes of free time is given, and I usually eat snacks and take a shower. From 10 p.m. , 80 minutes are given to finish our studies in the school library, and after that, we go back to the dormitory and sleep at 12 p.m. Although the weekdays can be tough, the freedom is on the weekends. I am not sure whether living with a restricted daily routine is good or bad, but at least now I'm taking it for good. I hope you and I can lead to the way of living the dream.
My hobby helped me a lot during my hard times. I love to watch figure skating performances. ⛸️ Story of athletes and their techniques, emotions represent their entire life, and that touches the bottom of my heart. I am a big fan of Yuna Kim from Republic of Korea. She is the olympic champion of 2010 Olympics at Vancouver, and silver medalist in Sochi, 2014. She eventually became a phenomenal skater with a record of all-podium (never going off the podium), but what touches me is her story as a figure skater. Korea has no private skating rinks, and as a result, she was at a harsh situation, with severe back injuries. However, all the ways she didn't give up skating and went through the dark tunnels, I identify with her deeply and still cannot measure the brutality she felt at this entire field. In Sochi olympics, her warm-up was distracted deliberately by other skaters, and the Russian audiences were so hostile for her. Her performance at there is unbelievable for me. I cannot speak more about her because she is beyond judgement. My favorite performance of her is 'Adios Nonino' in Sochi Olympics, and 'The Lark Ascending.', and I suggest you watch it.
I am so grateful for you to read my letter. ❤️ 💓
Chatting is my hobby, so feel free to tell me your story about anything. Who are you? I will wait for you!
P.S. What is your favorite song? If you tell me your one, I'll give it a try right away! Wish you all the happiness.
Sincerely,
Minjae Kim

The school class time makes a cycle of 'class for 50 minutes, break time for 10 minutes.' And we also have 8 classes during a day. During that time, we learn a variety of subjects. Not only fundamentals for Korea's college entrance test called Suneung, there are classes like English conversation (which I am doing an assignment for, but I would genuienly love to talk with you) and art. Lately, my concern is about the direction for me to find the balance between studying for test scores and interest. A great number of Korean students know that in reality, education is more like an evaluating tool than having an academic progress. That widespread thought for students makes it harder for other students to experience what they genuinely love. The truth that Korean students would low-key want to take care of themselves and develop their intelligence, but high-key wants to get a admission for universities, trying to get a better life desperately, seems so awkward and unhealthy. When I brought this thought to my friends, I only felt that they are just little sweet teenagers. It was not easy for me to connect with this thought, and find the best-leading answer. My answer for this is just undergoing this, changing little from little. Although the test scores do not define our knowledge, real education and test scores must be connected closely with each other, so I study to simply learn. Also, I don't want my friends to exhaust themselves, so I cheer my friends up. For example, by giving a piece of chocolate, they smile, then I could smile too. I am finding peace, and I would love to hear your own journey. What do you think about the most? And how do you dream your life to be?
