Dear American high school students
Hello! It’s wonderful to write you this letter. I am Joon Seok from Sangsan high school. I would like to send you all warm greetings. I am very pleased that we’re going to be pen friends. It’s incredible to have someone with whom I can share my opinions and experiences!
What do you usually do when you are at home? These days I am obsessed with listening to music. Especially, I want to share my interest in pop music with you today. Before I start studying, I always search for the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Then I listen to all of the songs listed and select catchy songs. To me, music will always be ‘music’ even if it’s in a different language. Simply, if the music sounds good, then I listen to it. That is why I listen to pop. I just love the way it sounds, especially in song lyrics, it just fits so well with the music. The language was never and will never be a barrier for me to appreciate and love music.
I first discovered pop when I was around 16 in 2021. That was the time when Justin Bieber was dominating globally with the addictive song, 'Peaches.' I used to sing along with my fellow friends for fun. Besides, pop rap caught my ears because I could feel the emotions even though I do not understand a single word they are singing.
Ironically pop music got me interested in K-pop. I was not that interested in K-pop music until recently. However, I could find some Korean language songs on Billboard charts. It was just amazing to see them on the charts. That’s when I was motivated to listen to K-pop music. Furthermore, music videos from one of the K-pop girl groups, Blackpink, were so well made. As for the choreography, I felt the K-pop industry has begun to strive for perfection. Hence that is why their dance choreography is intense and synchronized. It shows the amount of nights they have spent on practicing it. To sum up, both K-pop and pop have become fun, energetic, and relatively unique to me.
I believe in the power of music. Music creates social cohesion, it speaks to all when words can fail. And I also think music is a universal gift and its power to connect people is just without question. Although we are far apart and stay in a different culture, I am sure that music can overcome any possible cultural barrier. That was the reason I fell in love with the music of other countries. Now I have some questions. How do you feel about recent pop or K-pop music? Do you and your friends think music has a great impact on their life? I look forward to getting your reply. I’d love to hear your honest opinion.
Best regards, Joon seok
