Dear penpal
Hello my penpal I’m seungmin lee, just call me lee. I am 16 years old in American age and I’m a student of Sangsan high school. My hometown is ‘Gimhae’, a small city in South Korea so my friends usually call me “Gimhae city boy”. It is little bit childish, isn’t it? Maybe you guys have a childish nickname, too. Do you?
A great number of students in Sangsan High School live in a domitory and sometimes we go to our own home. Life in domitory is quite strict, but it is funny to run off with my friends. I heard that American schools have a free atmosphere. My school is free compared to other schools in South Korea. But it is true that Korea’s schools are strict and conservative compared to U.S. We should wake up at 6:30 and we have to arrive in school until 7:55. Also we should wear a united school uniform. Our school has 8 times(each time is 55minutes) to a regular education curriculum. After 4 times of study, I have a lunch break from 12:00 to 1:20. When it’s luchtime, I go to the student’s restaurant and have lunch, but it doesn’t taste bad. At 5:10 our regular curriculum is done. After all regular classes, we have an evening of 1 hour and 20 minutes. After that, there is self-learning time called “Night Self-Learning” from 6:20 to 9:20. My study is not done at that time. We study again until 11:20 in domitory. And then we sleep at 12:00.
Perhaps you think it is harsh and so much time to study. But when the exam period comes, even this much time feels insufficient and in a long-term perspective, it is helpful for me to get good score on tests. Most of South Korea students’ study for “수능” similar to the SAT or ACT in U.S. “수능” is very hard and difficult. Students only can take “수능” once a year. And we take 6 subjects. To achieve my dream, ‘doctor’ I have to get at least 390(total score is 400). So I’m very worry about my study. What is your dream? Do you get stress too?
On weekends, I usually play basketball or baseball with my friends. Especially, I was a baseball player until middle school, so I prefer to play baseball than play basketball( I have proud of my baseball skills too ^^). And I’m a big fan of LA Angles(one of MLB team), so I want to see LA Angles’s match if I go to U.S. I wonder what is your favorite sports.
In foreign country such as our country, the image of U.S is something of an open, free and individualistic country. And I think U.S is the most advanced country in the world. I hope you tell about your daily life in U.S and recommend American culture or customs related to a school.
Thank you for reading, and I hope we become a good penpal mate.
