Dear American friends. My name is Jun Hyuk, and I’m a first-year student at Sangsan High School. (I‘m 16 years old in American age!) I haven’t talked to foreigners much, so I’m really looking forward to learning about American students’ life and telling you how Korean students live. Let’s talk about my daily life. When the bell rings at 6:30, I wake up, wash up, and take my books to study, and go to the restaurant at 6:50. When I finish eating, I go to the classroom to study and start taking classes at 8:10. My favorite subject is P.E. and art class. Originally, I have liked P.E. since I was young, so it is natural to like P.E. class, but liking art class is a big change for me. I hated art class when I was in Middle school because I didn’t like drawing or making things, but I became interested in art after learning about many famous works, especially Les Meninas. What is your favorite subject? After school ends at 5:10pm, I have dinner, hang out with my friends, and study at class from 6:30pm to 9:20pm. We call this time 야자(after-school extra study time). After studying hard, I go to another place and study until 11:20pm. Finally, I get totally free time until 12:00. In this time, I usually go to friends’ room to play game or just watch YouTube in my room eating some snacks (I prefer Cheetos!) Since I’ve only talked about studying, you might think of me as a boring person. However, I’m a person who really likes playing. I have many hobbies such as watching movie or playing video games. I especially high key like watching soccer games. ( A great number of Koreans and I are big fans of Tottenham Hotspur) Like SAT and ACT, there is 수능 in Korea. I still have more than two years left to take this test, but it’s such an important exam that I’m studying with tension every day by day. Of course, I’m also looking forward to buying a brand new iPhone and traveling to New York after 수능 is over! What will you do after SAT or ACT is over? I can’t wait to read your message! Sincerely, Jun Hyuk

Sincerely, Jun Hyuk Dear Jun Hyuk, My name is Sylvie Roecker. I am 14 years old, and I am a freshman (a year before your first year in highschool since we have 4 years in high school in America) at Duchesne Academy. I am beyond excited that I have the opportunity to learn about what highschool is like in Korea, and to tell you about what school is like to be a highschool student in America. To start off my day, I wake up around 7:00 am to get ready for school. After I get all of my things for school ready, it is about 7:40, which is time for me to get picked up. Although school does not start until 8:40 am, I arrive on campus around 8:00. I socialize with my friends for a while, then go up to our first floor to see our school dog. After being on first floor for a while, it is 8:40. The bell rings and I go to my morning classes. On some days, we have an activity period before lunch, but on others, we go to lunch right after our classes. Our lunch period is about 25 minutes each day. When lunch ends, we have the remainder of our classes for the day. If it is Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, we get dismissed from school at 3:30 pm. But if it is Wednesday or Friday, we get dismissed at 3:00 pm. That is our daily schedule for school. After school, I usually have a lot of things to do. Those things include: Softball practice, working out, school work, or my other hobbies. Depending on the day, I finish all of my things to do at around 10:00 or 10:30 pm. I would say that my favorite subject is algebra, just since I understand it the most. I would have said that my favorite subject is art, but I have art next semester. My favorite paintings are probably the water lilly pond by Claude Monet or starry night by Vincent Van Gogh. I think that is enough talk about school for now. Like any other teenager, I have a lot of hobbies. I love to play softball, some video games, to paint, listen to music, bake, and to play with my dog. I think my favorite thing to bake is bread and pies. I cannot say that I am entirely sure what I will do after the SAT or ACT like you had asked, but after my fourth year of highschool, I would really like to go to university to study earth sciences. But in the sense of traveling, I would love to visit New Zealand and Japan! I have been to New York City before, and I would say that I think you would love it! I would recommend getting a slice of true New York style pizza. It is delicious! I would like to ask a couple of things about what it is like to go to a boarding school. What are your favorite things about boarding part school? What days are you allowed to go to your house? Do you enjoy being with your classmates all of the time? I also have some other questions. What is your favorite TV show? Favorite music artist? Favorite place you have been in the world? I would love to know! Well, I really enjoyed learning about what school is like in Korea! If yoy have any other questions about what my school in America is like, my school in particular, or if you would just like to talk with me, I would be more than happy to do so! It was great being able to finally talk to you! Sincerely, Sylvie Roecker

Thank you for your reply! 1. Boarding school actually has many pros and cons. One of the good things(My favorie part) is that the dormitory is right next to the school, so I may not be late even if I wake up late. But living in a dormitory sometimes make me lonely, because I can see my family every two to four weeks.(I can go to home every weekend if I want to, but it takes a lot of time and a lot of money...Of course, I can go to home on holidy, and live in home during summer-winter vacation) Also, being with frineds all the time sometimes make me tired, because there is no private place for me. 2. My favorite TV show is You Quiz, the tv show that invites pople who have special jobs or people that people may feel interesting. It always make me feel happy and comfortable! 3. My favorite music artist is Anson Seabra. He composed lots of amazing musics like 'That's us' or 'Trying my best'! His song always give me peace. 4. My favorite place that I have been to is spain, especially Barcelona. The view of the city was beautiful and the food was delicious, but the best thing was Gaudi's works such as the Cathedral of Familia and Guel park. Although I coun't see messi, but visiting Camp Nou also impressed me. If you have more questions, please ask me more. It was very happy and special experience for me to talk with you!
