Hello American friend, My name is Hyojin Oh from Sangsan high school. I am 16, and I transferred to this school two months ago. Korean high-school life is usually tedious but sometimes fun. My favorite class is advanced writing class, and it is why I can write a letter to you. Since this class is special to me, the moment I listen to this class makes me forget all the exam stuff temporary. I wanted to study abroad because I didn’t like how Korean high school worked. It is like a place which exists to prepare college, but I think high school should be a place to find what you really like and study about it. How is your school life? Hello Hyojin! My class has been really excited to do these pen pals with you guys! My name is Matthew, I am 14, I am from New York City, and I love playing video games, doing Jujitsu, and Singing. It is quite an honor to speak with you. First of all, I would like to say, that I didn’t really see any spelling errors in your letter, maybe some minor grammatical errors, but even I struggle with grammar. It is actually my first year of highschool! It is so far so good, and I like it here. I think that your point about high school was really smart! In america we have electives like music, art, and PE (physical education) we also have after school, where we can also do our favorite activities in places outside of school, hence why I like Jujitsu. My favorite class is science class, because I get to do experiments. I have some questions for you though, first of all, do you like playing video games? And if so, what is your favorite video game? Second of all, what is your education like there? Third of all, what is your favorite food? I personally like burgers and pizza. Finally, what is your favorite show? One of my favorite shows is Helluvaboss. I also love listening to music, mainly rap. Some of my favorite rap songs are Accordion by MF DOOM, One Beer, also by MF DOOM, and Hazard Duty Pay by Jpegmafia. Hi! Thank you for a long and sincere response!! First I will answer to your questions.
1.I like to play video games! Especially, playing Animal Crossing is a pleasure in life.
2. Education in Korea high school is somewhat cruel and tedious. The purpose of school is distorted into a place where we just prepare for college. We have to endlessly compete with friends for a good grade, for a good college in Seoul. Our school starts at 8am and ends at 5pm so we stay at school for about 9 hours. But there is something called evening self-study(which is not self because we must do it..we can't stay in dormitory during that time) from 6:30 to 9:20 so we stay at school for at least 12hours a day. A half of the day!
ABOUT CURRICULUM : We have PE class once a week and Music class once a week. Other subjects I chose are Politics and Law, English, Korean Grammar, Chemistry, Biology, Calculus and Advanced English Writing. These classes are four times a week.There are clubs where we can do activities we like. But these are used as a tool to make your school record better(School record is used as one of the tests to go to college). Before I transferred to this school, I was in basketball club and New Makers club(we made eco friendly cities and future cities here) not for college but because I liked. It is sad that club here isn't working as I thought but I think there is still new opportunity here..
3. My favorite food is crème brûlée. It is a desert from France. I really love sweet things so this is one of my favorite desert. I also like pizza too! I really want to eat it right now..🤣
4. My favorite show is 신서유기(Sinseoyugi). Sinseoyugi is a Korean entertainment show. The concept is from China. Famous Korean actors and celebrities are in this show.
Now, I want to talk about you! I was surprised that you like jujitsu! I wanted to learn it too but I decided to learn taekwondo instead. Is there other sports you like or instruments you play? I listened to the music you send me. I usually listen to pop music so rap was kind of new to me but I liked it! Especially DOOM-Madvillian and Roll Call. I have a friend who likes rap too and it is amazing you also like rap😆I watched the link you send me. It was really new to me and I could feel the America culture. Btw my favorite youtuber is Markiplier! Who is your favorite youtuber?

First of all, I'm sorry about the late reply.
Second off, I made a huge mistake. I blocked you. I thought that your account was a random person, and not you. I am really really really sorry.
I was actually really surprised to hear that you liked Markiplier, as I thought He was only really big in the states. Here's a funny story. When I was around 7, I was watching markiplier with my dad. This was around the time when he cursed a lot. My dad banned me from watching him, but now I watch him sometimes. Creme Brule is a really good desert. My favorite part of eating it is when you crack open the top. New York City is known for having some of the best pizza, so I'm lucky that I get to live here. I terms of my favorite youtuber, it would probably be Jimmyhere. He has a corny sense of humor, but he uploads a video every Wednesday, and I always watch it and try not to laugh. I always lose. A lot of my friends were obsessed with animal crossing, so I'm happy that you like it as well. I have heard a lot about taekwondo, but I don't really know what it is, so I guess my question to you is: what is taekwondo?
My school is a school for kids with special needs (I have ADHD) so we are also basically being prepared for collage. My days are also long, because of my extra curriculars.
I'm sorry to hear about your curriculum, it doesn't sound very fun, but this brings up a question that I have for you. What kind of curriculum would you like to have?
About the instruments, I actually sing! My vocal chords aren't in the best state right now, but I could send you audio clips over Instagram.
I don't really play any sports, I really only do Jujitsu, and the place that I go to isn't competitive. I plan on going to other places in the future, that are competitive.
I'll try to check out Sinseoyugi, as it sounds very interesting!
