Pen Pal Letter
Minho
Greetings [American high schooler],
I'm Minho, a second-year student at the Sangsan High School in South Korea (Junior for American
high school). I got to have an opportunity to write this letter as I was taking a class called Advance
English Composition I. Lucky me that only eight second-year students could write this letter. XD
All of the Korean students know about America—I'm sure—but I wonder how many American
students are familiar with South Korea. Maybe you’ve heard of Squid Game which has been a hit
for a while.
Though you won't probably know, this really small country makes every student study a lot. So
nearly every student here in Sangsan High School puts sincere effort into studying—especially for
this season as the mid-term exam is less than two weeks.
I was actually surprised to hear that you guys spend 4 years during high school, ‘cause we only
take 3 years to graduate it. So I’ll tell you how I live my life during the weekdays, as you may find
many differences comparing your life. Please share them with me—I really want to hear them!
As a dormitory student, I wake up while listening to the so-called “wake-up song” at 6:30 A.M.
Today’s song was A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley (look at our dormitory proctor’s
music taste ). After washing my face and having breakfast, I go to school and get 8 blocks of
class every day by 5:10 P.M.
After having dinner, we have another self-study time for nearly 3 hours—which is mostly mandatory
in fact. During that time we study, do our homework, play games, or sleep…. Not everyone studies
so hard, I’m sure you may have seen at least one student the same as us in your school!
We come back to the dormitory starting from 9:20 P.M. and do another study for about an hour and
a half. And I go to bed immediately ‘cause it’s quite exhausting to live a life like this for 5 days
successively.
You may think I am living a stressful life in general, and well, I can’t fully deny it. But mostly I'm
living a happy life, as friends do many silly things during study time, and we help each other in
many ways, such as by sharing how to solve the problem, and encouraging one another. Also, I
relieve stress while listening to music. I’m a big fan of some old rock music, like Last Nite by The
Strokes, and Don’t Look Back In Anger by Oasis, so I listen to those and put stress aside. (Are
there any songs you prefer to hear while you’re under stress?)
But it was after I realized many people made it possible for me to live a more stable and
comfortable student life that I decided to live my life happier. Though being an introvert, I’m trying
to appreciate even the small happiness and express that feeling to as many people as possible.
That was how a high schooler lives his life here in a very small country, South Korea. I really want
to hear how you live your life on nearly the opposite side of the Earth. I’ll look forward to your reply!
Best,
Minho
