Dear American High School student,
Hi! My name is Min and I am a first grader in Sangsan Highschool. I am so excited to exchange letters with you and get to know about American school life. Are you high-key curious about Korean school life, too?
To begin, I want to tell you about my daily school life. Because we have a midterm exam in 3 weeks, all my friends and I are studying hard. So, I will tell you how students (also me) study here. I live in a dormitory, so I wake up right after the morning song rings. It rings at 6:30 am, but I and my friends started waking up at 5:30 am to study before going to school. Our class starts at 8:10 am and ends at 5:10 pm. Students here study when they have spare time, which includes breaktime and lunchtime.
As you can see, a great number of students in Korea study very hard. It is because our grading system compares students’ scores to classify grades. And these grades we get every time are summed up altogether and are used when we sign up for universities we prefer to enter. We have other ways to enter universities, such as 수능 which is similar to SAT and ACT in America and essay exams. I want to know if there are other ways to enter university except for SAT and ACT in America.
After school ends, we have a free hour to eat dinner and take a rest. I usually take shower, and many friends study after eating dinner during this free hour. And then, we have 3 hours of after-school study which starts at 6:30 pm. Also when we go back to our dorm, we have an extra 1 hour to study.
Without any hobby, it is hard to endure this school life. I usually watch a short video that summarizes the plot of the movie before I go to bed. Also, I am a big fan of some YouTubers, so they are my only hope during exam periods. Do you have any hobbies, too?
I can’t wait until my exam ends. After I graduate high school and enter the university I wished, I hope to visit New York one day. I have never been there. So what would you recommend doing in New York to me in the future?
The picture below shows my friends studying social studies. I look forward to your reply. Have a good day!
Best,
Min
