Dear American High School Student, My name is Jiyul Jeon and I am a freshman at Sangsan High School. I am 17 years old in Korean age I'm 15 years old in American age! My friends call me Jyul. If you pronounce Jiyul Jeon quickly, it becomes Jyul. Do you have a nickname like me? I'm so excited to write you a letter now! I hope you enjoy reading my letter, too. I will tell you about my life at Sangsan High School, a Korean high school. I live in a dormitory, and a great number of my friends also prefer to live in a dormitory rather than commuting from home to school! If you live in a dormitory, you can live more regularly than at home and meet your friends on weekends. My family lives in Daejeon, so we can meet once a week. It's a little unfortunate, but I can endure it because school life passes quickly and it's fun!! If you come to Daejeon, I recommend you to go to Sungsimdang!!! Now I'll tell you my dormitory schedule in detail. We have a roll call every morning. I'm checking the number of people. I do it at 6:30 in the morning, and as soon as I wake up, I wash up and meet my friend at 6:40 and go eat breakfast. There is a separate restaurant in the dormitory. Our school lunch is really good. It's 5:20 p.m. when I arrive at school and take a class after eating. I eat dinner from 5:20 to 6:30 and exercise or do hobbies. I study at school from 6:30 to 9:20. I wash up from 9:20 to 10 or study that I haven't finished. Oh, for your information, I have to go to the dorm by 10 o'clock. I study in the dormitory reading room from 10 to 11:20. I play or study with my friends from 11:20 to 12. I like to draw, so at this time, I draw a picture. Or I watch movies because I like to watch movies. Do you have a favorite actor? I'm a big fan of Yoon Siyoon. According to the dormitory rule, it is right to sleep at 12 o'clock, but when I want to study more or have homework left, I do it until 2 a.m. and go to bed. It's my daily routine now. It's hard sometimes, but it's so much fun. How's your school life? Is life very different from high school in Korea? I also want to experience American high school someday! I look forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, Jiyul Jeon

Hello, I actually did enjoy reading your letter, I never would have thought it would be that different in different states. I wanted to ask you, do you have two different ages? Could you explain how that works? By the way, I'm 16 years old, I'll be 17 in june. I am a Junior at Bryan Community High School. In Nebraska we have K-5th grade in Elementary, then we have 6-8th grade in Middle School, but in High School we have 10-12th grade. As a 10th grader you're a Freshman, as an 11th grader you're a Junior (that's mee!) and as a 12th grader you'd be a Senior! It is actually very different here, I live with my aunt because my mom has a drug addiction shes working on, and my dad is abusive. I wake up at 7:00a.m to get ready for school. My aunt comes from her job to pick me up around 7:40a.m to take me to school. We get out at 3:00p.m and I go home and normally end up having work around 4:00p.m. I work at an Italian restaurant if you want to know. On Tuesdays we have plc days and we get out an hour early at 2:00p.m. Do you guys still have to wear masks in school or around town? Also, I couldn't imagine what it'd be like living in a whole nother town than my parents. Although I don't ever get to see my dad because I have a protection order against him, it would really suck to not be able to see your parents when you need to. I know it does in my case. I don't understand how you guys stay up so late and survive throughout your days, I would be exhausted.

Hi!😊 Isn't it hard to work at an Italian restaurant? If you tell me where it is, I will go there to see you someday!! There are times when you are having a hard time and times when you are sad because you don't see your parents, but you can overcome everything and do anything!! I don't know much about you but I want you to be happy all the time!!🥰🥰 Whatever happens, good things happen after bad things happen! Let's cheer up and work hard toward our goals!!!! Have a good day❤️❤️ Sincerely, Jiyul Jeon

And as for the question you asked about masks, my school still has to wear masks. Sometimes it's frustrating, but it's okay because I got used to it! You should wear a mask when you come to Korea. There is Jeonju Hanok Village near my school and there are many delicious things. I want you to come. For the lastly, I don't know much about you but I want you to be happy all the time!!🥰🥰 Whatever happens, good things happen after bad things happen! Let's cheer up and work hard toward our goals!!!! Hi! I read your letter so well! This letter is really the final letter..!! I'm sorry I kept changing it.🥺 I hope you read it well! You are curious about the two ages in Korea, but to tell you about this, I am just 17 years old. But I am 16 years old when I do important paperwork in a hospital or abroad!! I was 15 years old not too long ago. But after my birthday on November 16th, I am now 16 years old!😉 And you asked me if I should wear a mask, but my country still has to wear a mask. But now, I don't have to use it outside legally! So I usually don't wear it outdoors.😙 The mask is so uncomfortable. 😞 Well, I'll change the subject What do you think is the most important thing in life? The most important thing in my life is my love for myself. I have strong self-love.😆 If I love myself, I can overcome any hardship! And life is always happy, and even if I make a mistake, I comfort myself thinking, "I can make a mistake." How much do you love you? And if you come to Korea, I recommend visiting Jeonju Hanok Village! Our school is located nearby, and the hanok with Korean tradition is very pretty! Besides, there are so many delicious things! It was really fun to write a letter!! Have a good day today and always be happy!!🥰🫶
